The general concept of a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is one of a large population nucleus, together with adjacent communities that have a high degree of economic and social integration with that nucleus.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area consists of nine counties, which include Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan and Shelby. These counties all have a high degree of economic and social integration with the nucleus of Marion County, which includes most of the urbanized area of Indianapolis.
Each MSA must contain a census-designated place with a population of 50,000 or a census-designated urbanized area with a minimum population of 100,000. Outlying counties must have a specified level of commuting to the central county and must meet certain standards regarding metropolitan character, such as population density, urban population, and population growth.
