Central Indiana Tornado Statistics was created by the Indiana University Purdue University
Indianapolis (IUPUI) Digital Library using data compiled by the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), retrieved from their web
site in May 2001. Tornado touchdowns and paths in central Indiana from 1950 to 1995 have been plotted to create a
county-by-county view of tornado activity in the region. The paths plotted here are straight lines between the start
and end points for each tornado and therefore may not accurately represent areas of damage on the ground.
A statewide view of touchdowns in Indiana and surrounding areas has been created by the IUPUI Department of Geography. It covers the the period from 1950 to 2001 and is based on data from the National Climatic Data Center's Severe Storms Database.
How to Use this Site:
First select a county from the top of this page. By selecting the zoom in tool on the left of a county page
and then clicking on a point of interest on the map, you can get a closer view. Move back out by using zoom out. Or select full extent to see the full paths
of tornados that crossed county boundaries. Select the pan tool to grab the map and drag it up, down, left or
right. If you choose the identify tool and double-click on a touchdown point, you will see the date,
time, Fujita Scale rating, number killed and injured and
other data for that touchdown. Finally, use the address finder tool to display the location of a street address. You must include a street number, North, South, East or West (if appropriate), and Street, Boulevard, Avenue, etc., in the address. Abbreviations may be used except for the street name itself. Not every street number is available.
